Why am I Fundraising?

There are hundreds if not thousands of jokes and greetings cards which allude to the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease – people and not necessarily old folk, becoming confused and saying silly things. My sisters and I used to smile when my Mum got our names muddled up and wasn’t too certain whether it was Saturday or Sunday. Those were the early stages. These days, as we come away from visiting her, we just cry. Her eyes, which used to light up when we approached her, are now either closed or she just stares at the wall. She’s forgotten how to walk, forgotten how to talk and she can’t do anything without there being someone there to help her.

What is really frightening though is that the disease is very common, it can attack people in middle age and there is no cure – yet! Whilst we are young(ish) and fairly fit my sisters and I are going to try to make a difference and we are hoping to raise around £7,500 between us on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society (Registered Charity no. 296645).

It’s too late for our Mum but we don’t want to see others having to endure years of heartbreak. Our plan is not to go round rattling collection boxes and asking for donations, though the donation option is still available – we are staging a number of fund raising events that you might wish to attend. We are now planning our campaign with some things booked and some just provisionally arranged.

If you want more details or have an idea that will raise money, please ring me on 01422 375034.

I would just like to say a huge thank you for all the support!
