Ad Of The Month September: Nike Colin Kaepernick
It’s that time of the month again and we’re ready to present to you what ad we’ve decided is our ad of the month.
After looking through a huge number of ads, there was only one winner for us at WAM. Our ad of the month is the Colin Kaepernick Nike ad.
For a little context, Colin Kaepernick was a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and in 2016 decided to kneel for the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. This protest received both a positive and negative response, but he was willing to sacrifice everything for believing in something.
This led fans calling for Kaepernick to be fired, which then in March 2017, he opted out of his contract for the 49ers leading him to become a free agent, however controversy followed. After Kaepernick went through off-season and training camps unsigned, it lead to allegations suggesting that he was being avoided by clubs due to his on-field political action and pressure from the league.
Nike recently decided to run an ad campaign using Kaepernick as the face of it with the slogan “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” This campaign has seen, again like Kaepernick’s kneel, a lot of positive and negative responses.
It’s such a powerful and meaningful ad which has had a global reaction and seen Nike relish in its success as they have sold out of 61%more merchandise since the campaign.
In fact globally, sales generally are up after the campaign aired. Profits jumped by 15% to over $1 billion, North American sales rose by 6%, as did China by 24% and 11% in Europe, Middle East and Africa, bringing Nike revenue for the period to increase by 10% to $9.9 billion.
Overall could have been seen as a risky move, but thankfully Nike are seeing the benefits of what is an incredible campaign. Well played Nike.
