How To Build A Positive Working Environment

No matter who you work for, you should never have to accept that working in a toxic environment is the norm. Working in a toxic environment is bad for both working and personal life. You want to build an environment that everyone is happy to work in and there are a few ways to ensure that your working environment is positive.

  1. Let your employees have their say

A lot of us will have done this, but if you’re unable to speak your mind to your boss at the risk of offending them, then this is the start of a toxic workplace. You might be concerned of how they will react or they may completely disregard the comment, you want someone who’s willing to hear every opinion and who’s able to reply with a methodical and sensible approach so you’re able to understand why they may want to do something a specific way.

You don’t have to agree with them all the time, but they should be completely understandable with your opinion and view on the situation and vice versa. The more you’re able to speak your mind, the more comfortable you’ll become at work and the more you’ll enjoy your working environment.

  1. Promotions those who deserve it

You may want to have a look at the type of people who are getting promoted and see if there’s a common style that the business prefers.

No matter what you should always promote the most qualified, deserving person. Everyone notices when people get a promotion and almost the first question they’ll ask is “did they deserve it?” you have to ensure that the answer to this is yes, otherwise your employees will notice and become increasingly frustrated.

You have to ensure that the person who is deserving of a promotion gets the chance, you want others to see that progression in your business is there as an opportunity which in-turn will encourage others to produce quality work.

  1. Reward risk takers

In an environment where risks can be a common occurrence, you’d expect that clear rules should be set out when it comes down to it. What constitutes a good risk? Who needs to approve the risk? What happens if the risk falls short? You should celebrate when risks pay off or if they fall flat.

If they don’t pay off, you don’t want to be hounded by your peers as to why you took the risk in the first place. You want to have a look at what went wrong, learn from it and push forward.

As leaders, you should encourage your employees to take risks, because it’s broadening their horizons and giving them opportunities to learn and develop which will only improve your business in the long run.

  1. Ask for employee’s opinions and input

As the leader of a business people will expect to listen to your insight which in-turn could provide them with valuable information that can help create a discussion amongst them. You need to encourage others to speak up so they have an opportunity to be heard.

If you’re just sat listening to your peers with no input from the employers, then you’re creating a toxic workplace. Give people the opportunity to speak up and bring a valuable opinion to the table.

Encouraging others to speak will help you and your business find different solutions you may not otherwise have thought of. You’re leading a team of highly intelligent employees and having them input into your business is extremely valuable.

  1. Praise your employees

We get that you do have to self-promote yourself to get to different places but hear us out. As a leader, you can’t reward this behaviour when it starts to become a common occurrence, as it will quickly develop into a competition and people will lose sight of the main goals and objectives.

People won’t feel the need to toot their own horn if you’re doing it for them. You should be quick to praise and slow to criticize and pull the self-promoters aside and let them know that this particular behaviour isn’t going to slide.

If you praise your employees, you’ll see the benefits almost instantly. Such a simple “great job” can go a long way. They will feel like they’re a valued member of the team and the work they produce will continually be to a high standard.

You want your workplace to be as positive as possible so you and your employees are happy working there and produce high-quality work. The more you’re able to interact with your employees and make them feel as though they’re a valuable member of the business, the better work will be produced and your company will continually grow.
